Welcome to The Nursery
The Nursery, where Charlotte and Willem's grandchildren played under the supervision of Miss Hoek. Miss Hoek was the family's nanny. Miss Hoek considered herself to be of a higher caliber than the other staff; she dined with Mr. and Mrs. van Beuningen and not with the other staff.
In the past, this space contained two garden doors. Over the years, the open balcony was added to the current restaurant hall. This makes it a nice place for our hotel guests to have breakfast.
The war
During the war, Charlotte managed to convince the camp commander several times to allow food parcels to be brought to Camp Vught. The conservatory of the former children's room of Huize Bergen was converted into a 'smearing station'. Every day, dozens of women and girls from the area helped cut, spread and pack hundreds of sandwiches. On average, they made at least 1000 food parcels per week.
To prevent whole loaves of bread, pieces of meat and packages of butter from being shipped to Germany, they were immediately processed into sandwiches. Every week, each prisoner in Camp Vught received one package.
Every morning, women and girls from the village gathered at Huize Bergen to make sandwiches and put together parcels. These were then taken to the camp by a gardener from the estate, with a horse and cart, in cooperation with the Red Cross. Every day, more than 1000 parcels went to the camp, filled with well-filled sandwiches and other essential items such as toothpaste, medicines and bandages.
