The Sitting Room Servants

Landgoed Huize Bergen now uses this space as a so-called bread kitchen, but in the past, when the Van Beuningen family employed staff, this space was assigned to the servants. This function is most comparable to that of a maid. These were often unmarried young ladies, although it also happened that this function was fulfilled by a young man. These servants came together in the shared living room with the maids. This was special for that time, that they were given their own space to relax and socialize with other staff. Charlotte was a real innovator in this. Never before had staff been treated so humanely.
